THE MAN ON LINCOLNS NOSE is a 2001 Oscar® nominated
documentary film about the legacy and artistry of Production
Designer, Robert F. Boyle. The title refers to Boyles
breathtaking re-creations of the presidential faces on Mt.
Rushmore for the climactic chase sequence in "North by Northwest."
The
film examines the highlights of Boyles 57-year career
as an independent Hollywood Art Director and Production Designer.
From his illustrations to his uncanny ability to scout locations
to creating sets on sound stages, Boyle has created some of
the more memorable scenes ever put on film, like the spine-tingling
conclusion on the arm of the Statue of Liberty in "Saboteur"
or the crop-dusting scene in "North by Northwest."
As Production Designer Robert Boyle worked on 75 feature films--everything
from the atmospheric 1941 horror classic "The Wolf Man" to
the evocative 1967 thriller "In Cold Blood." A favorite of
Alfred Hitchcock, Boyle designed five of the Master of Suspenses
best films: "North by Northwest," "Saboteur," "Shadow of a
Doubt," "The Birds" and "Marnie." And his realistic designs
added immeasurably to the success of such Norman Jewison films
as "Fiddler on the Roof," "Gaily, Gaily" and the original
"The Thomas Crown Affair."
THE
MAN ON LINCOLNS NOSE reveals Boyles creative process„his
ability to bring to life a directors vision so completely„and
how he imbued a film with emotional and physical vitality
through his evocative production design sketches. The documentary
presents original illustrations and film clips along with
visits to original filming locations. It includes interviews
with Norman Jewison, Production Designers Henry Bumstead,
Harold Michelson, Al Nozaki and Jim Bissell and Producer Walter
Mirisch. This film provides present and future generations
with the opportunity to explore the mind and motivations of
a true master of motion picture art direction
