The story
of the infamous 1842 mutiny and hangings aboard the U.S. Brig
Somers, a U.S. Naval warship. Nearly 150 years later, the
film follows the Belcher Expedition to discover the shipwreck
off Veracruz, Mexico where the Somers was lost in 1846 during
the Mexican War. This programme chronicles the first joint
government underwater archaeological expedition by Mexico
and the United States. Herman Melville, a cousin of the Somers
second-in-command was inspired by this mutiny to write his
famous novel, Billy Budd. The alleged mutiny, the U.S. Navy's
first, became such a scandal that the US Naval Academy was
founded at Annapolis, Maryland 3 years later in 1845.
