MARS:
Planet of Dreams explores our civilizations fascination
with the Red Planet. It documents the history-making events
that, throughout this century, have renewed our hopes of finding
evidence of Martian life and have a created a growing culture
of scientists, theologists, astronomers, science fiction writers,
movie-makers, hobbyists, and commentators who keep the dream
alive through theories, debate, evidence, experimentation,
and fiction.
While
the evidence is hotly debated and far from concrete, MARS:
Planet of Dreams builds an electrifying case for why Mars
intrigues us more than anywhere else in the universe. In 1971,
the orbiter, Mariner 9, transmitted pictures to Earth showing
dry, meandering riverbeds and deltas -- unmistakable evidence
that water had once flowed freely on the surface in a warm,
hospitable climate. In 1976, the Viking orbiter sent the first
color pictures back to Earth. Many now believe photo #70A13,
curiously marked "Face", is real evidence of Martian existence.
Consider
the discovery of monolithic-like formations, including a vast
pyramid like structure on the Martian surface. Or the meteorite
from Mars that scientists say contains a fossilized organism
that was alive billions of years ago. In 1993, the sudden
and mysterious disappearance of a NASA orbiter put Mars back
into the headlines. And most recently, the Pathfinder orbiter
has begun a new era of Martian exploration.
MARS:
Planet of Dreams takes us on an incredible journey of space
exploration that compels us to explore the impact on our daily
lives of the ultimate contact with extra terrestrial intelligence.
What we will discover may alter our basic beliefs, our evolution
as a species, and our understanding of our place in the universe.
