NEW Whales
of the Pacific North West
For thousands of years human beings
have been fascinated by whales. We have worshipped
them and slaughtered them, revered them and studied
them; yet despite this fascination, our knowledge
of them remains superficial. It is uncertain
when, how or why the ancestors of the whale gradually
moved into a purely aquatic environment. What
has resulted is a group of mammals totally isolated
in time and space from all other terrestrial
creatures. Twenty-five million years of evolution
separates us. Only recently have we begun to
bridge that vast environmental chasm. |

NEW Sharks on the Brink of Extinction
For 400 million years, sharks have
roamed the earth's oceans. Within the last
century, humans have threatened to wipe them from
existence. Today, new age technology is providing
scientists with valuable insight about the behavior
of sharks within the marine environment. This knowledge
will lead to making the waters not only safe for
humans, but spare the sharks from their current
state: an existence on the brink of extinction! |

Masters
of the Sea
With their razor teeth, demonic grins,
and reputations as man-killers, sharke have long been
called Master of the Sea. But perhaps more fitting
is Masters of our imaginations. Hollywood and the mass
media have created this enemy in our minds and a culture
bent on inventing weapons, repellents and deterrents
that are threatening shark populations worldwide, and
in turn, the ecosystems in which they exist. This documentary
helps us see a different side of sharks — the first
step to alleviating our misguided fears. |

The
Frozen Island
Baffin
Island in Canada is the fifth largest island in the
world. For six months each year the ocean in this cold
region is frozen over with 1-3 meters thick. Only accessible
during a short thaw, this area can be extremely treacherous
as huge sections of ice break apart and crash together
in spectacular fashion. Partnered with a native Inuit
guide, explorers travel by dogsled and snowmobiles sixty
dangerous miles up the frozen ocean to the Floe Edge
Æ a dynamic magnet for wildlife where the ice breaks
free. Nar Whales, Beluga Whales and Ring Seals all converge
and begin a journey up Admiralty inlet in search of
food.

Mystery
of the Whale Caves
Hundreds of feet below the
oceans
surface off a remote island, divers, exploring the reefs
and intricate caves stumbled upon an enormous underwater
entryway in the rock. They uncovered a truly chilling
find: the skeletal remains of tow adult pilot whales
and two juveniles, trapped in a small chamber far inside
the cave. Did the adults choose death rather than leave
their children trapped alone? Is this an ancient burial
ground where whales go to die? Journey with renowned
ocean cinematographer John mcKenney as he retrieves
bone samples, and enlists the latest carbon dating technology
to find the answers.
