                        Lords of Nature
For centuries, humans have feared wolves, cougars and other similar carnivores, driving them to the edge of extinction.  In recent years, researchers have begun to discover that top predators actually play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and preserving biodiversity. This program details the science behind those findings and follows the reintroduction process of these misunderstood beasts of prey.

Once believed to be extinct, the rare Kakapo is a flightless, nocturnal parrot with an odd mating call.  With a lifespan up to 120 years, the Kakapo were once one of the most widespread birds in New Zealand. Now the last remaining Kakapo population is plagued by a curse that could finally bring about their extinction. A delightful adventure story of dedicated scientists who work tirelessly work to keep this charming species alive.

                        What Would Darwin Think?
In 1839, Charles Darwin first visited the island archipelago of the Galapagos.  It was the inspiration for his theory of evolution.  Today Darwin would be surprised by the tourist mecca the Galapagos has become: 200,000 visitors a year, 40,000 permanent residents. Too many people are bringing too many of their goods and invasive species from the outside world, threatening the future of this one-of-a-kind place.

For thousands of years human beings have been fascinated by whales, yet despite this fascination, our knowledge of them remains superficial. It is uncertain when, how or why the ancestors of the whale gradually moved into a purely aquatic environment.  What has resulted is a group of mammals totally isolated in time and space from all other terrestrial creatures.  Only recently have we begun to bridge that vast environmental chasm.

Sharks on the Brink of Extinction
For 400 million years, sharks have roamed the earth’s oceans. Within the last century, humans have threatened to wipe them from existence. Today, new age technology is providing scientists with valuable insight about the behavior of sharks within the marine environment. This knowledge will lead to making the waters not only safe for humans, but spare the sharks from their current state: an existence on the brink of extinction.

For thousands of years man has fished the great oceans, built port cities for trade, and cast his eye toward uncharted waters. These activities have produced pollution, oil spills, overfishing, and deforestation that threaten the delicate balance of our ocean world. The ocean’s vastness does have limits and this program contemplates man’s responsibility in protecting the oceans.

                        Land of the Whale
Land Of The Whale journeys from the high altiplano, home of the Andean condor and the camel-like guanaco, to the desert shores where the land and sea collide- home to one of the greatest congregations of life on the planet.  Here, vast numbers of southern sea lions, southern elephant seals, and southern right whales gather to feed and to raise their young, exploiting the bounty of the cold southern waters.
